What an AVIF file is
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It was released in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media, a non-profit industry group that develops royalty-free media technology. The picture is compressed with AV1, a codec first designed for video on the internet, and stored in a HEIF container, the same container family iPhones use for HEIC photos.
The format supports transparency, high dynamic range (HDR) and wide colour gamut, and it can compress lossy or lossless. Its strength is small files at good quality; its weak points are that decoding needs more processing power than older formats and encoding can be slow.
Why websites send you AVIF
Sites that care about speed often offer AVIF to browsers that can show it and an older format to everyone else, as Mozilla's format guide advises. The result is that a picture saved from a web page can arrive as .avif. Browser support arrived in these versions:
| Browser | Shows AVIF from version |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 85 |
| Opera | 71 |
| Firefox | 93 |
| Safari | 16.1 |
| Edge | 121 |
Outside the browser, support is patchier. Image viewers, office programs and upload forms that accept only JPG or PNG will refuse an .avif file, which is where this converter helps.
JPG or PNG from AVIF
Choose JPG for photos: it's accepted almost everywhere and keeps files reasonably small. Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background or sharp text and lines, since PNG is lossless and keeps transparency.
Expect the result to be bigger than the AVIF; that's the price of a format every program understands. If the size matters, set a limit in Make every file smaller than or a smaller Longest side (px).
An AVIF with HDR or wide-colour content is converted to a standard picture, so very bright highlights may look flatter than in an HDR viewer. For ordinary photos and web graphics, nothing changes.
Transparent AVIF images
AVIF logos and icons often have a transparent background. As PNG, it stays transparent. As JPG, the transparent area is filled with the colour you set in Background for transparent parts, white by default. Match it to the page or document the image is going into.
Questions
- Is AVIF better than JPG?
- For file size, usually: that's what it was built for. JPG wins on compatibility, because practically every app, printer and upload form accepts it. Keep the AVIF for the web and use a JPG copy for everything else.
- Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
- JPG is lossy, so it compresses the picture again, but at the default quality of 90 the change is small. Choose PNG if you want the AVIF's pixels kept exactly.
- My AVIF won't open in my image viewer. Is it broken?
- Probably not. Many programs still can't read AVIF. If your browser shows the image, drop it here and save a JPG or PNG copy.
- Can I make the JPGs fit an upload limit?
- Yes. Open More options and type the limit into Make every file smaller than, in KB or MB. Each file is saved at the highest quality that fits, up to your Quality setting; only if that isn't enough is the picture made smaller. A 300 KB limit means 300,000 bytes, so it also passes forms that count 1,024 bytes per KB.
- Can I convert JPG or PNG to AVIF?
- Not on this page. The image converter saves AVIF as well as WebP, JPG and PNG.
- Are the files uploaded?
- No. AVIF decoding runs in your browser with the open-source libavif library, and the JPG or PNG is saved directly to your device.
