Module 5: Forms, uploads and file-size limitsLesson 23 of 256 min read
Photo and signature uploads for IBPS, UPSC, NTA and SSC: sizes and rules
Indian exam forms ask for a photo and signature, sometimes more, each with its own size window. A file outside it is refused, and a photo that breaks the rules can sink the application. Here are the numbers for four big exam bodies, then how to make the files.
The notice always wins
The values below come from the IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI notice of 30 June 2026, the current UPSC instructions, the NTA bulletins for JEE Main 2027 and NEET UG 2026, and the SSC CHSL 2026 notice. Rules change between exams: an older UPSC FAQ gives different numbers from the current instructions. Check the notice for your exam before you upload.
IBPS (bank PO and similar exams)
IBPS asks for four JPG or JPEG files and also takes a live photo.
- Photo: 200 × 230 pixels preferred (4.5 × 3.5 cm), 20 to 50 KB.
- Signature: 140 × 60 pixels preferred, 10 to 20 KB.
- Left thumb impression: 240 × 240 pixels at 200 DPI (3 × 3 cm), 20 to 50 KB.
- Handwritten declaration: 800 × 400 pixels at 200 DPI (10 × 5 cm), 50 to 100 KB.
UPSC
The photo must be a recent colour JPG, 20 to 200 KB, on a plain white background, with the face covering at least 75 percent of it and a natural expression. No pixel size is given.
For the signature you sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white paper, and scan all three as one image: JPG, 20 to 100 KB, 350 to 500 pixels.
A mandatory live photo is matched against the uploaded one; a mismatch stops the application.
Rejection causes UPSC lists
Face under three quarters of the photo, not facing the camera, too close or ear lobes not visible; dark background; uniform; hidden eyes or dark glasses. For the signature: blurred or dark scans, lined or coloured paper, rotation, or not exactly three signatures.
NTA (JEE Main and NEET UG)
JEE Main 2027 asks for a JPG photo of 10 to 200 KB, face about 80 percent of it with ears visible, on white, and a JPG signature of 10 to 100 KB. NEET UG 2026 uses the same KB limits. A live photo is also taken.
SSC
SSC takes no uploaded photo: it is captured live in the application. The notice asks for good light, a plain background, the camera at eye level, and no cap, mask or glasses. Never photograph an existing photo.
The signature is a JPEG of 10 to 20 KB, about 6.0 × 2.0 cm. Blurred or miniature signatures can be rejected summarily, so check the preview before submitting.
Making the files
Start from a sharp photo against white and a dark-ink signature on plain white paper; the guide on photographing a signature for forms covers this.
In the Photo and signature resizer, pick the preset for your exam and file. Where a notice gives no pixel size, the tool uses 413 × 531 for UPSC and NTA photos, 500 × 350 for the UPSC signature, 400 × 150 for the NTA signature and 472 × 157 for SSC. For other forms, choose Custom: my own pixels and KB range.
For signatures, thumb impressions and declarations, tick Make the paper white (for scanned or photographed paper).
The tool aims above the minimum at 1024 bytes per KB and below the maximum at 1000, so either meaning of KB passes. If the best quality is still under the minimum, it adds an empty comment block inside the JPG; the picture is unchanged.
Pick your exam's preset and get each file inside its limits.
Photo and signature resizerQuick check
Three questions. Pick an answer to see why.
You're applying for an SSC exam. Which file do you prepare in advance?
Show the answer
Answer: Only the signature, because the photo is captured live SSC captures the photo live; only the signature is uploaded.
What makes the UPSC signature different from the others?
Show the answer
Answer: You sign three times, one below the other, in one image UPSC asks for exactly three signatures in one image.
Why does the tool aim above min × 1024 bytes and under max × 1000 bytes?
Show the answer
Answer: So the file fits whether the portal counts a KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes Inside both readings, the check passes either way.
Rules change
File formats and official photo rules change. Each guide shows the date it was last checked; for forms and official photos, the authority's own page has the final word.
